Variegated Privet is a fast evergreen shrub whose creamy-edged leaves brighten dark corners of a landscape. Small gray-green leaves rimmed in white give it a light, almost silvery look that stands out against brick, fences and darker shrubs. Growth is quick and upright, commonly 6–10 ft tall if left alone, so it is most often used as a screening hedge, a fast privacy planting along a property line, or a clipped standard. Clusters of small white flowers open in spring with a strong, sweet fragrance. It grows in full sun to part shade and tolerates a wide range of soils; the variegation holds best with plenty of light. Shear after bloom to keep it dense, control height and limit volunteer seedlings.
