Needlepoint Holly is an upright evergreen with slender, single-spined leaves and red winter berries. Compared with Burford it is narrower and a little more graceful, generally reaching 8–10 ft tall and 5–8 ft wide, with glossy foliage carried on arching branches. Landscapers use it for screening along fence lines, for evergreen structure at the back of a bed, and as a pruned small tree beside a drive or walkway. The heavy berry set gives winter color and brings birds into the yard. Plant it in full sun or part shade; it is not fussy about soil as long as drainage stays good. Water regularly through the first year; after that it stands up to the heat of a Texas summer with occasional deep watering.
