Elaeagnus, or silverberry, is a vigorous evergreen with silver-speckled foliage and a loose, arching habit. New shoots shoot out well beyond the body of the plant, which is exactly why it fills a screen so quickly — a row of it can close a gap along a fence line in a couple of seasons, typically settling around 6–10 ft tall and as wide. Leaves are olive green above with a dusty silver-brown underside that flashes in the wind. Small, easy-to-miss flowers open in fall with a surprisingly sweet fragrance.
