Dwarf Yaupon is a compact, spineless evergreen holly native to the Southeast and built for heat. It forms a dense mound of tiny dark green leaves, usually 3–4 ft tall and wide, and responds so well to shearing that it is often kept as a low clipped hedge or a tight ball. Because the species grows wild across East Texas, it copes with our clay soils, summer heat and stretches without rain better than many imported shrubs, though young plants still need regular water while they root in. Use it for foundation plantings under low windows, for edging along walks and drives, in parking islands, or massed as a groundcover-height border. This dwarf selection is grown for foliage and form and rarely sets the berries of the full-size species.
